For Japan eVisa, holders visiting Japan in 2025, March through May and September through November are best because of the mild, dry weather. But these seasons draw many visitors, particularly during the well-known cherry blossom season. Based on your travel choices, party size, and rain tolerance, we have developed a month-by-month guide to assist in selecting the ideal time and site for your trip.
Southern Japan is quieter than the northern and central regions, even in spring and summer. April and October are lovely, without the summer rains that hit the south. If you want to go into Yakushima far south, note that this difficult island is colder than the rest. Yakushima's woods are beautiful year-round, but hikers should layer from November to April since the island is cold in winter and spring.
Although June and September may be rainy, Tokyo is a year-round destination with pleasant weather (unless in winter). April is a favourable balance with average temperatures of 14°C, lower rainfall than summer, and fewer tourists than May. Naturally, Tokyo is busy as the world's most populous metropolis. Don't underestimate June, July, and August since they are busy yet have many festivals and festivities.
Kyoto has a long summer, with high temperatures from May to September. Summer and late spring are popular tourist seasons, like Tokyo. October to March are the best months to visit Kyoto to avoid crowds. The dead of winter might seem lifeless. October is ideal for its comfy jeans, light jacket, low crowds, and little rain.
Japan's cherry blossom season is beautiful yet hectic. These blush-coloured blossoms bloom earlier in spring in the south than in the central and northern regions. Nagasaki and Hiroshima blossom in the first week of April, and Tokyo blossoms in the middle of the month. In northern Sapporo, most flowers bloom in mid-May. Environmental factors dictate bloom dates; however, numerous sources provide information on these treasured trees. The Japan Meteorological Corporation produces bloom maps and forecasts in January. For peak cherry blossoms, visit Japan mid-March–mid-April.
Explore Japan's seasonal wonders with our concise guide. Whether you are chasing cherry blossoms in spring or admiring autumn colours, find the perfect month for your next adventure.
If you are familiar with the term ‘Japanuary,’ you are likely aware of the exceptional snowfall that transforms Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido into a haven for skiers and snowboarders. Every winter, cold Siberian winds carry snow across the Sea of Japan, delivering perfectly fluffy, deep, something-to-write-home-about snow. Japan has tons of ski resorts, and once you see powder like this, your first Japanuary pilgrimage definitely won't be your last. Save us a spot on the lift!

There are several onsen locations in Japan, such as Hakone, a must-see mountain town tucked away in the slopes of Mount Fuji where you may relax in your bath as the snow gently falls all around you. Traditional ryokans may be somewhat frigid if you want to remain there since many of them lack adequate heating, but they make up for it with enticingly hot baths.
